Kim Johnson

Having grown up in the city of Detroit, Mrs. Johnson knows first-hand of the struggles that youth face living in the inner-city.

Her own experiences teaching in Detroit Public Schools and as a non-profit Director in southwest Detroit drove her to build a community-based organization that meets the needs of youth 5-18 enrolled in struggling schools and economically challenged communities.

  • Kim Johnson is a native Detroiter, educated in Detroit Public Schools. She is an active member of the Central State University Alumni Association and was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame in 2024. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree, she studied on the graduate level at Wayne State University, Central Michigan University and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.

    Her professional career whether teaching or in the nonprofit industry has always centered around positively impacting Detroit’s youth through education, life skills, recreation and mentoring. In 2005, Kimberly received a vision and in the midst of recovery from a life-threatening tragedy; she began to turn the vision into reality with her young children laboring alongside her.

    Mrs. Johnson is the Founder, President and CEO of Developing Kingdoms in Different Stages, also known as Developing K.I.D.S. It is a nonprofit organization in Detroit that serves over 1,000 youth annually through four programs that provide free, high-quality activities; Youth Development, Family Engagement, Workforce Development and Community Support. Having grown up in the city of Detroit, Mrs. Johnson knows first-hand of the struggles that youth face living in the inner-city. Her own experiences teaching in Detroit Public Schools and as a non-profit Director in southwest Detroit drove her to build a community-based organization that meets the needs of youth 5-18 enrolled in struggling schools and economically challenged communities.

    From 2008-2019, Mrs. Johnson served in consultant and executive level positions that have created positive and long-lasting impact on city and state-wide systems that support youth educationally and during out-of-school time. A few of her significant accomplishments during this time have included the coordinated training of close to 500 youth development professionals, growing a youth-serving organization network from 10 to 150 organizations, the development and implementation of a re-granting program that distributed over $500,000 in grants to 78 organizations. For five years, Kim has served as the co-chair of the Summer Learning Table of and currently serves as a Steering Committee Member of 313Reads, a citywide collective impact coalition to support literacy access, equity, and justice in Detroit.

    Since 2020, in addition to leading extraordinary growth and leadership of Developing K.I.D.S., Kimberly has spent more than a decade mentoring executive directors of grassroots organizations in Detroit. She is the Co-founder of BEDAD (Black Executive Director Alliance of Detroit), a network of senior Black leaders of nonprofit organizations in Detroit. Kim has served on a subcommittee of the Governor’s Student Recovery Advisors Council in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She is a member of state-level advisory and design committees for out-of-school time system building. Her most recent professional accomplishment is raising over $8M and serving as the owner for the construction project to open a 23,000 sq.ft facility for Developing KIDS that will open in the fall of 2024.

    Within her church home of Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church, Kimberly serves as the Youth Department Director and member of the Nurse’s Ministry. She has been an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for more than 20 years. Kim has received national, state and local recognition and awards for her leadership and service to the community. Kimberly calls herself blessed and highly-favored to be the wife of Charles Johnson and the mother of three adults; La Tressa, Serena and Jamal Newberry, II.

Meet Our Board

Charles Johnson, Chairman Adecco

  • Charles Johnson is the Board Chairman of Developing K.I.D.S. Charles has an exceptional ability to drive customer engagement; build strategic partnerships while successfully managing competing priorities in high stress environments. He is currently the Director of Customer Success at Adecco. Charles has been engaged with Developing K.I.D.S. as a volunteer since 2009, moving to the advisory board, board of directors, and then in officer positions. He has twenty (20+) years of account management professional experience with a proven track record in operations management, business development, and project management.

Lauren Hawkins, C.P.A., Treasurer The Skillman Foundation

  • Lauren Hawkins is the Treasurer of Developing K.I.D.S. and joined the Board in late 2019. Lauren was born in Detroit and moved to the northern Michigan town of Roscommon during grade school. She obtained her bachelor’s degree with a dual major in accounting and management from Northwood University in Midland, Michigan. She is also a Certified Public Accountant. In March 2016, she assumed the role of Controller at The Skillman Foundation, and more recently, in 2024, she transitioned to the position of Director of Accounting & Finance. Lauren is married to Jack (Noel) Hawkins and is the mother of two boys, Jack and Evan.

Jamal L. Norman, Director

J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, N. A.

  • Jamal Norman was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he attended Cincinnati Public Schools and graduated from Gilbert A. Dater High School. Upon graduation, he attended Bowling Green State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a specialty in Finance. During his more than 12-year career in banking, Jamal has held several positions, including Personal Banker, Relationship Banker, Private Client Banker, and currently works as VP, Sr. Relationship Manager - Government & Not-For-Profits at J.P. Morgan Chase Bank. Jamal joined the Developing K.I.D.S. board in January 2022 because he is passionate about making a difference in the lives of children and young adults in the inner city, specifically through financial literacy and education. Jamal is married to his wife Jennifer, and they have one son.

Brandon Lee, Vice Chairman United Way for Southeastern Michigan

  • Brandon Lee serves as the Vice-Chairman of our Board and has been a long-time supporter of Developing K.I.D.S. Brandon has over 10 years of experience in the non-profit field, including founding a non-profit dedicated to improving acceptance and matriculation in higher education for youth in Detroit. He has held several roles in his career at United Way for Southeastern Michigan and is currently Chief Operating Officer & Executive-Vice President. Brandon is a graduate of Oakland University and, in 2019, was awarded the 10 in 10 Distinguished Alumni award.

Megan Fenkell, Director Jamie and Denise Jacob Family Foundation

  • Megan Fenkell joined the Developing K.I.D.S. board in November 2022. Megan has dedicated her career to supporting children and families, particularly in the City of Detroit. Megan has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Michigan State University in Elementary Education. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Detroit and now works for the Jamie and Denise Jacob Family Foundation. Megan is proud to serve on the Developing K.I.D.S. board because the organization’s holistic approach to supporting children’s development aligns with Megan’s own values around supporting the whole child into becoming a prosperous, successful adult.

Karlynne Tucker Scaggs, Director Hope Network of Michigan, Inc.

  • Karlynne Scaggs is our Board Director. She has volunteered for events with Developing K.I.D.S. and offered support for the past few years. Karlynne came out of semi-retirement to work with Hope Network of Michigan, Inc., as a Senior Project Manager, a part of a team that develops and operates Assisted Housing Programs and Facilities throughout Michigan. Her professional journey of over 35 years in Multi-Family Affordable Housing and Property Management has been predominantly in Southeastern Michigan, with recent past two years in multi-State Property Management Operations for a national Non-Profit Organization. Her work in affordable housing programs has provided for thousands of families, senior citizens, and veterans with low incomes, or special needs, to live in quality affordable apartment communities with government rental assistance.

Patrice Williams, RN, Secretary Plymouth Canton Community Schools

  • Patrice Williams is the Board Secretary of Developing K.I.D.S. She grew up in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Cass Technical High School. Patrice’s special connection to the organization comes as a parent. Her children, Lauren and Jalen, previously attended Developing K.I.D.S. Patrice attended Grand Valley State where she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance. Patrice earned her Master’s degree in Business Administration from Wayne State University. She attended Wayne State and earned her Bachelor of Science degree to become an Registered Nurse. She now works as a school nurse for Plymouth Canton Community Schools and continues her hospital work with Ascension’s Providence Park Hospital in Novi, MI.

David M. Krysak, Director Progressive Companies

  • David Krysak joined the Developing K.I.D.S. board in December 2022. David is a senior executive and licensed Architect in the architecture, engineering and construction industry working as Director of Practice Development for Progressive Companies. For over 20 years David has been a recognized expert and a trusted partner to his clients allowing him to execute project engagements on nearly every continent. David earned a Master of Business Administration from Rutgers University in addition to a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Lawrence Technological University. As a graduate of Leadership Detroit Class ’42 David is focused on the equitable and long-term growth of the City of Detroit.

La Tressa Newberry & Serena Newberry, JD, Co-Founders

  • La Tressa and Serena Newberry are the daughters of our Founder, Kim Johnson. She recognizes them as the Co-Founders of Developing KIDS as they labored along side her to get the programming of the organization off the ground. Both attended Detroit Public Schools for grades K-8 and graduated from the Roeper School. La Tressa and Serena spent their teen and young adult years recruiting, facilitating workshops, serving in leadership roles, supporting grant reviews, and completing administrative tasks. They continue to support the organization and mentor several youth and young adults engaged in our programs. La Tressa is a resident of Washington, DC, a graduate of Howard University and studying to pursue her career in the medical field. Serena is residing in Michigan after completing a 10-month Schwarzman Scholar Fellowship at Tsinghua University in Beijing China for her Masters degree. She’s a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, and Hofstra’s School of Law.
